I was not able to assemble the heatsink due to the amount of force necessary to get it to snap into the retention bracket. Even using 2 of the thinner thermal pads, the thickness of my SSD (no stock heatsink) was such that even when applying a decent amount of force, the heatsink would not snap into the retention bracket. Could I have forced it? Certainly. Would I have destroyed my SSD (worth 70 times as much as the heatsink) in the process? Possibly.

I ended up leaving the heatsink stuck on with the thermal pad without the retention bracket. It works well, reducing the temperature under load by 11C (from 58C to 47C under a 5 minute sustained sequential read). That said, there are other heatsinks that don't require the user to put dangerous amounts of pressure on their expensive SSD to install, and I recommend that you buy one of those.
